Microsoft recently released the August non-security optional update. These experimental updates occasionally introduce unforeseen complications. The new KB5120998 update causes vanishing mouse pointer styles. It also reverts desktop wallpapers to solid black. Microsoft investigated the issue and confirmed the update as the culprit.
Disruption on Non-English Systems
Microsoft initially struggled to identify the root cause after receiving numerous user reports. However, developers soon confirmed a critical error. Specific code components modified by KB5120998 fail to load personalization settings correctly within non-English environments. Consequently, the system automatically reverts to the default mouse pointer style.
Persistent Cursor Issues
Custom cursor styles become completely ineffective. High-DPI pointers transform into oversized, default white arrows. Furthermore, custom animations revert to their standard defaults. Frustratingly, users cannot fix this by manually altering mouse settings in the Control Panel. The malfunction occurs during the configuration loading phase, not within the settings themselves.
Desktop Wallpapers Turning Black
Microsoft also confirmed the update causes customized desktop wallpapers to turn completely black. Affected devices fail to load desktop personalization settings properly. Therefore, the default wallpaper displays as a solid black screen. This glitch also severely impacts slideshow wallpapers and high-contrast themes.
Anticipated Fix Timeline
Manual resets remain utterly ineffective due to the underlying configuration loading error. Currently, Microsoft developers are actively preparing a comprehensive repair strategy. Hopefully, the stable September Class B update will resolve this frustrating issue entirely. Otherwise, Microsoft might temporarily remove the problematic code changes. They would then reissue a repaired optional update later in September.
