Confronted with relentless competitive pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic in the generative AI arena, Alphabet’s artificial intelligence division, Google DeepMind, is undergoing the most sweeping leadership reorganization and strategic transformation in its history. Demis Hassabis – co-founder of DeepMind and its chief executive since 2010 – has formally stepped down from the role. Simultaneously, Google’s Chief Scientist Jeff Dean has departed to co-found a new AI venture called Discovery Loop, with Google committing a strategic investment in the company.
Hassabis Transitions to Chairman and Alphabet Chief Scientist
Following his departure from the chief executive role, Demis Hassabis will assume the position of Google DeepMind Chairman – a designation that has historically existed at some remove from the organization’s day-to-day executive management. In parallel, Hassabis will take on the title of Alphabet Chief Scientist and continue leading Isomorphic Labs, the AI-driven biopharmaceutical spinout he has championed since its inception.
Koray Kavukcuoglu Elevated to Senior Vice President
Operational command of Google DeepMind passes to Koray Kavukcuoglu, the organization’s current Chief Technology Officer. As confirmed in Kavukcuoglu’s own announcement on X, he will be elevated to Senior Vice President and will report directly to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai – a structural alignment that places DeepMind’s day-to-day operations squarely within Alphabet’s core executive chain.
Jeff Dean Departs to Launch Discovery Loop
The restructuring is accompanied by the departure of one of Google AI’s most consequential figures. Jeff Dean, who has served as Alphabet Chief Scientist, has announced his resignation and will co-found Discovery Loop alongside several senior colleagues.
Discovery Loop’s stated mission is to develop AI models capable of improving themselves with minimal or no human intervention – effectively automating the iterative experimental feedback loops that have historically required intensive involvement from human researchers. The ambition is to compress the cycle of hypothesis, experimentation, and refinement into a process that AI systems can run autonomously.
Google Invests Strategically and Becomes Exclusive Cloud Provider
Google has announced an undisclosed strategic investment in Discovery Loop and will serve as the startup’s exclusive cloud infrastructure provider. This arrangement – in which Google seeds a spinout and recovers value through cloud revenue – reflects a pattern the industry has observed across several of Google’s recent AI bets, and raises natural questions about the net return dynamics of such circular funding structures.
Dissolving AlphaFold and Doubling Down on Anthropic
The leadership transitions are accompanied by two strategic decisions that signal a pronounced shift in Google DeepMind’s organizational priorities.
AlphaFold Team Dissolved
The team behind AlphaFold – whose work on protein 3D structure prediction earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry and established DeepMind’s reputation as a serious scientific institution – has been formally disbanded. Some members have been reassigned to commercially oriented AI projects elsewhere within the organization; others have departed entirely.
Anthropic Investment Raised to $40 Billion
Concurrently, Google has announced plans to increase its total investment commitment in Anthropic to as much as $40 billion. Having injected $10 billion as recently as April of this year, Google has structured the remaining $30 billion as a performance-contingent tranche, subject to Anthropic achieving specified capability milestones.
A Strategic Pivot from Science to Commerce
Taken together, these moves reveal a Google that is consciously repositioning DeepMind away from its heritage of frontier scientific exploration and toward a posture of commercially aggressive product development. The pressure applied by OpenAI and Anthropic has evidently accelerated a transformation that might otherwise have unfolded on a more gradual timeline.
