Microsoft has rolled out new preview builds to both its Experimental Channel and Beta Channel this week. The Experimental Channel receives Build 26300.8697, while the Beta Channel receives Build 26220.8690. Neither build introduces significant new features. Instead, both focus on resolving known issues. However, the headline development is that Microsoft has formally advanced the Experimental Channel’s branch to Windows 11 26H2, making this the earliest public preview of what will become the next major Windows 11 release, expected around October 2026.
Understanding the Experimental and Beta Channels
What Sets These Two Channels Apart?
Although the two builds share an identical changelog this week, they differ in a fundamental way. The Experimental Channel now officially carries the Windows 11 26H2 version label, while the Beta Channel remains on Windows 11 25H2.
Over time, this divergence will become more pronounced. The Experimental Channel will receive new features earlier and more frequently. Meanwhile, those features will eventually migrate to the Beta Channel after further refinement.
Stability vs. Feature Velocity
The trade-off between the two channels is clear. The Experimental Channel updates at a faster cadence, which inherently makes it less stable. Users who prioritize access to the latest features will find it appealing. However, they should expect occasional rough edges and unforeseen issues during day-to-day use.
The Beta Channel, by contrast, updates at a more measured pace. It offers meaningfully better stability, making it a more suitable choice for those who want an early look at Windows 11 without sacrificing reliability.
What This Build Fixes
Version Label Update
After installing this update, users on the Experimental Channel will see their version reflected as 26H2 under Settings => System => About. This change marks the official start of the 26H2 preview cycle.
File Explorer Visual Improvements
Microsoft continues to refine the visual experience inside File Explorer. This build corrects an incorrect color rendering in the copy dialog when using dark mode, while also improving overall reliability within the application.
Start Menu Reliability
The Start Menu receives targeted reliability improvements. After this update, freshly installed applications will appear in the menu without requiring a sign-out or restart. Similarly, recently uninstalled applications will be removed from the menu promptly.
Taskbar Fixes
Microsoft addresses a longstanding display issue in the system tray. Specifically, when using a smaller taskbar size, the tray area could become clipped or extend beyond the visible screen boundary. This build resolves that behavior.
Startup Apps Settings
The reliability of the startup application management interface has also been improved. Users can now access Settings => Apps => Startup with greater consistency and stability.
Critical Virtualization Bug Fixed
Perhaps the most significant fix in this build targets a serious system crash. Previously, certain users encountered stop errors during system restarts, virtual machine operations, or while running specific applications. The root cause was traced to virtualization components.
The two associated bug check codes are HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E). Both have been addressed in this release.
Looking Ahead
With the 26H2 branch now active in the Experimental Channel, the pace of preview development is set to accelerate. Feature additions will arrive first in the Experimental Channel before gradually propagating to the Beta Channel and, ultimately, the stable release. The official launch of Windows 11 26H2 remains on track for around October 2026.
