Microsoft had previously announced plans to deprecate the personal edition of Microsoft Whiteboard, while directing enterprise customers to migrate to the new whiteboard experience integrated within Microsoft Teams. Many users expressed considerable frustration over Microsoft’s decision to retire the app. Although Microsoft did not reverse its decision based on that feedback, it has pushed the deprecation and migration timeline back by one month.
Personal Whiteboard Data Deletion Pushed to November
In its earlier announcement, Microsoft stated that support for personal users would end on August 22, 2026, requiring users to immediately export and migrate their data or risk losing it entirely. All personal Whiteboard user data was originally scheduled for deletion on September 5, 2026 – a date Microsoft has now pushed back to November.
According to Microsoft’s revised timeline, personal Whiteboard users will lose the ability to create or edit any boards starting September 25, 2026. The final data export deadline is now set for October 16, after which Microsoft will no longer offer any export functionality – meaning the data will be permanently deleted at that point.
Please note: while the data export deadline falls on October 16, the Whiteboard app itself – including both its desktop and mobile versions – will stop functioning entirely on November 30. From that date forward, personal users will have no ability to access Microsoft’s Whiteboard app whatsoever.
Enterprise IT Administrators Must Still Migrate Promptly
Microsoft’s plan calls for migrating enterprise Whiteboard usage into Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneDrive, which the company refers to as the new whiteboard experience. Under the updated timeline, migration must be completed by September 25, the legacy Whiteboard application will be deleted on October 16, and the standalone Whiteboard client will be fully retired on November 30.
The final data deletion date for the legacy enterprise Whiteboard application is October 16, 2026. IT administrators must complete migration and backups before September 25, since Microsoft will delete the data on October 16. Organizations that do not wish to continue using Microsoft’s Whiteboard app going forward should export their data and migrate to another platform as soon as possible.
