Recently, Disney sent an updated subscriber agreement to Disney+ streaming users in the United Kingdom. In this agreement, the company asserts its right to insert advertisements across all subscription tiers. These commercials will appear at the beginning and end of programs. Furthermore, Disney does not guarantee the exact volume or frequency of ads for any specific tier.
Premium Tiers Now Include Commercials
Previously, Disney+ offered a cheaper, ad-supported plan. This tier provided fewer features but cost significantly less. Now, the new strategy introduces commercials into every single tier. Therefore, a separate ad-supported package might become entirely unnecessary. Consequently, the platform will likely phase out the lowest-tier ad plan entirely.
Currently, the premium Disney+ package costs $18.99 per month. It originally promised an uninterrupted viewing experience without commercial interruptions. However, this recent policy shift clearly betrays that original promise. Of course, this aggressive monetization strategy is hardly surprising. For instance, Netflix initially encouraged password sharing before strictly prohibiting it.
Ad Blockers Break Video Playback
Crucially, the company emphasizes that users cannot skip certain commercials. Moreover, employing ad blockers will likely disrupt normal video playback. Specifically, the streaming platform might halt your video entirely if it detects blocking software. Disney is clearly following the aggressive anti-ad-blocker tactics pioneered by YouTube.
Global Expansion Seems Inevitable
Currently, this policy change seemingly affects only the UK market. As recent coverage highlights, Disney changes subscriber agreement to allow ads on every plan. British users must accept the updated agreement to continue watching content. Other regions have not reported similar notifications yet. Nevertheless, these sweeping changes will almost certainly expand to all global markets eventually.
