AI-Powered Fraud: How Cybercriminals Are Bypassing Security with Ease
According to a new report by Malwarebytes, cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to devise sophisticated fraud schemes capable of evading most cybersecurity systems.
One notable example is a phishing campaign targeting users of Securitas OneID. The attackers deploy advertisements on Google, disguising them as legitimate promotions. When a user clicks on such an ad, they are redirected to a so-called “white page”—a specially crafted website devoid of overtly malicious content. These pages serve as decoys, designed to bypass automated security systems employed by Google and other platforms.
The essence of the attack lies in concealing the actual phishing objectives until the user performs specific actions or until the security system completes its checks. AI-generated “white pages” feature text and imagery that appear convincingly authentic, including fabricated faces purportedly representing “company employees.” This makes them even more credible and difficult to detect.
Previously, cybercriminals relied on stolen images from social media or stock photos. However, the advent of automated content generation enables faster adaptation and the creation of unique pages tailored to each campaign.
Another instance involves the remote access tool Parsec, popular among gamers. The attackers crafted a “white page” themed around the Star Wars universe, complete with original posters and design elements. This content not only misleads security systems but also captivates potential victims with its appealing presentation.
AI facilitates these schemes by effortlessly bypassing checks. For example, during Google’s ad validation process, only benign “white pages” are reviewed, raising no suspicions. Yet for users familiar with the context, such pages often appear amateurish and can be easily identified as fraudulent.
In response to the growing use of AI in criminal activities, some companies are developing tools capable of analyzing and detecting AI-generated content. However, the challenge remains acute: the versatility and accessibility of AI make it an attractive weapon in the hands of bad actors.
This situation underscores the critical role of human oversight in data analysis processes. What might seem innocuous to a machine-learning algorithm often immediately strikes a human as suspicious or absurd.
