Android Authority has confirmed with Google that future Google TV televisions and set-top boxes will feature remote controls equipped with dedicated buttons for instant access to free live TV content.
Previously, Google had introduced shortcut buttons on remotes for both early Android TV and subsequent Google TV devices, enabling users to quickly launch pre-installed streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+. The newly confirmed addition of a button labeled “Free TV” or “Free Play” is designed to offer users seamless access to Google TV’s ad-supported live TV channels.
Certain third-party Google TV devices have already adopted this design. For instance, the remote control for Walmart’s onn. Google TV 4K Pro set-top box includes a prominent blue “Free TV” button positioned at the center, alongside buttons for Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+.
In addition, Google has significantly expanded its free content offerings on Google TV, incorporating platforms like the multimedia player Plex, news aggregator Haystack News, and free streaming services such as Tubi. The lineup also includes major U.S. news networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, along with content in Spanish, Hindi, and Japanese. Altogether, Google has introduced access to over 800 ad-supported channels—an effort not only to diversify its revenue through advertising but also to enhance user convenience and bolster its competitiveness against Roku, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung in the smart TV market.
