Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that the company’s autonomous taxi service (robotaxi) is tentatively scheduled to launch on June 22 this year in Austin, Texas.
Musk also revealed that the first Tesla vehicle capable of departing the production facility and autonomously driving to a customer’s home is expected to complete its journey on June 28.
Prior to this, a short video was shared on the platform “X,” showing a black Model Y bearing the “Robotaxi” label on its side, stopping respectfully at a crosswalk to yield to pedestrians. In a recent interview, Musk stated that an initial fleet of 10 to 20 vehicles will be deployed for testing to verify that Model Y units equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities can operate reliably on public roads.
Regarding safety, Musk emphasized Tesla’s unwavering commitment, describing the company’s approach as obsessively thorough. He also disclosed that the operation of autonomous vehicles will be confined to specific geofenced zones and that Tesla employees will provide real-time remote monitoring to ensure operational safety—measures aimed at instilling public confidence as the robotaxi fleet moves toward commercial deployment.
However, Musk acknowledged that the proposed timeline may still shift, should additional safety considerations arise.
