Recently, Microsoft raised the subscription prices for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans in certain markets, citing the enhanced value brought by AI-powered features related to Microsoft Copilot as the primary reason. Microsoft also emphasized the need for increased investment to support the development of these capabilities.
Indeed, Microsoft has been actively integrating more artificial intelligence functionalities into its Microsoft 365 suite. The latest addition is Microsoft Copilot for OneDrive, currently available exclusively in the web version of OneDrive.
The web-based Copilot for OneDrive offers the following features:
File Summarization: This feature allows users to access files stored in OneDrive and generate AI-driven document summaries. Up to five files can be selected simultaneously for summarization.
File Comparison: Users may choose up to five files for comparison. Copilot will analyze the documents and present their differences in a clear, tabular format—highlighting aspects such as date, time, title, author, last modified details, content summary, unknown fields, and key contributors.
Question Answering: Users can select files and pose specific questions to Copilot, which will then generate precise, context-aware responses based on the selected documents.
While these features might appear new, they have already been available to Microsoft 365 accounts used in professional and educational settings. It is only now that they are being extended to personal and family subscribers.
Currently, the supported file types remain limited. According to Microsoft, the Copilot features support Office documents, Fluid files, Loop components, PDFs, TXT, RTF, web files, and OpenDocument formats. In the future, the range will be expanded to include images, videos, meeting transcripts, OneNote notebooks, and more.
Lastly, the maximum supported file size for these functionalities is 150MB. Files exceeding this limit are not eligible for summarization, comparison, or Q&A interactions. Microsoft has stated that further enhancements are underway to enable Copilot for OneDrive to handle larger files.
