In addition to reporting that Apple is actively developing an Apple Watch equipped with camera functionality, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman also believes that the forthcoming iPhone 17 series—expected to debut this autumn—will feature a display with a significantly higher refresh rate and enhanced responsiveness through the integration of ProMotion technology.
Apple first introduced ProMotion display technology with the iPad Pro in 2017, later bringing it to the iPhone lineup with the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021. This innovation enables dynamic refresh rates across specific areas of the screen, allowing for smoother visuals without increasing the refresh rate uniformly across the entire display. Moreover, when displaying static content, the refresh rate can intelligently drop to as low as 10Hz, effectively reducing overall battery consumption.
Previous reports have suggested that Apple plans to extend ProMotion support to a broader range of iPhone models. As such, it is anticipated that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will adopt this advanced display technology, offering users faster refresh rates, reduced display latency, and longer battery life as a result of more efficient power usage.
However, it remains uncertain whether the iPhone 17 Air—rumored to feature a slimmer and lighter chassis—will also incorporate ProMotion.
Should ProMotion be implemented across the entire iPhone 17 series, it is expected that all models will also include Always-On Display capabilities. As for other specifications, the new devices are likely to be powered by the upcoming A19 chip series. There are also reports suggesting a redesigned camera module, potentially adopting a horizontal layout reminiscent of Google’s Pixel lineup.
