Unveiled as the final highlight of Apple’s latest software announcements, iPadOS 26 embraces the Liquid Glass design language alongside a suite of Apple Intelligence enhancements. This update introduces a more versatile floating window interface, adaptive dropdown menus tailored to individual apps, and refined file management and PDF preview capabilities—further distinguishing iPadOS from iOS and significantly enhancing its usability.
The newly introduced floating window system allows apps to be displayed in resizable windows or full-screen mode, according to user preferences. Multiple windows can be arranged side by side using preset layouts, and the update also brings the Mac-like Exposé Command Center to iPad, enabling swift navigation and reorganization of layered apps to elevate multitasking performance.
File management has been refined with the ability to view expanded metadata, drag frequently used folders to the desktop Dock, or seamlessly transfer files between apps. Users can now choose specific applications to open files through an intuitive context menu. Meanwhile, PDF handling gains macOS-style preview features, allowing for rapid browsing and editing directly within the system.
Addressing the needs of content creators, iPadOS 26 adds support for external microphones—whether connected via the iPad’s port or through Bluetooth—within apps such as FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, and Zoom. Audio enhancements include noise suppression, wide-area capture, and intelligent auto-recognition recording modes. Users can also pair with devices like AirPods to achieve studio-quality sound capture.
Additionally, iPadOS 26 now supports background execution for certain creative applications during video exports, allowing users to multitask with other apps without interruption. To empower developers, Apple has released the Background Tasks API, enabling the creation of apps with true background processing capabilities.
Currently, iPadOS 26 is available for iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), the 11-inch iPad Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation).
