Windows 11 Notepad Gets Smarter: Spell Check & Autocorrect Arrive
As early as March of this year, Microsoft introduced a Notepad application with spell-checking capabilities to its internal personnel. Following months of testing, Microsoft has officially integrated the new version of Notepad into Windows 11 with the latest 11.2405.13.0 release, offering “spell check” and “autocorrect” functionalities. Users can enable these new features within Notepad’s application settings interface.
Notepad, a Windows staple since 1983, has long been perceived as an application with little evolution. It has remained largely unchanged throughout successive operating system updates, with only recent times witnessing significant enhancements. The most substantial alteration in recent years appears to be its transformation from a Win32 application to a UWP application, facilitated by Windows 10 and 11 support.
Similar to the features offered in Microsoft Office, both “spell check” and “autocorrect” automatically highlight misspelled words and provide correction suggestions. These functions are compatible with txt, md, srt, ass, lrc, and lic file formats and are enabled by default, with users having the option to manually disable them.
Microsoft continually enhances Notepad through updates via the Windows Store platform. However, some users express a desire for stricter control over feature changes, as the addition of more functionalities could potentially introduce complexity, instability, and increased risk factors.
