Windows Update Will Unlock Ryzen AI 300’s Copilot+ Potential
At COMPUTEX 2024, AMD unveiled its new Zen 5 architecture and introduced consumer processors based on this architecture, including the desktop Ryzen 9000 series and the mobile-oriented Ryzen AI 300 series processors. The APU, codenamed “Strix Point,” or Ryzen AI 300 series, no longer supports Windows 10, focusing instead on Windows 11 and its AI applications.
According to TomsHardware, AMD Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer John Taylor confirmed that laptops equipped with the Ryzen AI 300 series will not receive Copilot+ certification at launch, and therefore will not support features like Cocreator in Paint until a Windows update later this year. Despite this, the Ryzen AI 300 series processors’ built-in NPU offers 50 TOPS of computing power, surpassing the 45 TOPS of Qualcomm’s X Elite/Plus NPU.
Recently, Microsoft introduced the Copilot+ PC. Laptops from Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Samsung, and Microsoft itself, equipped with Snapdragon X series processors, will hit store shelves and begin shipping on June 18. These new-generation Snapdragon-based products have been Copilot+ certified at launch, allowing users access to native Windows AI features.
While the Ryzen AI 300 series does not yet have Copilot+ support, users can still leverage the processor’s AI capabilities through third-party software, such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Blender. Intel’s Lunar Lake is expected to be released later, with related devices potentially receiving Copilot+ certification, though the exact timing remains unknown.
