Western Digital adds 8TB capacity version to SN850X NVMe SSD
In 2022, Western Digital released the WD_Black SN850X, a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD that conforms to the 2280 M.2 specification. It offers capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, with optional RGB lighting-equipped heatsinks. The launch price started at $189.99.
Recently, Western Digital expanded the WD_Black SN850X lineup by introducing an 8TB version, also available with or without RGB lighting heatsinks, to cater to hardcore gamers’ demands for extreme performance and ever-increasing storage capacity. This new variant is now available on the international online store, with a starting price of $849.99, more than double the current price of the 4TB version.
The 8TB WD_Black SN850X still features the company’s proprietary 3D TLC NAND flash memory, boasting sequential read and write speeds of 7200 MB/s and 6600 MB/s, respectively, with 4K random read/write speeds of 1200K IOPS and 1200K IOPS. The drive’s total bytes written (TBW) is 4800, and it comes with a five-year limited warranty. Notably, its sequential read speed is 100 MB/s lower than that of the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions, but its random write speed is 100K IOPS faster, and its TBW increases incrementally with capacity.
Furthermore, Western Digital has optimized the WD_Black SN850X for gaming scenarios, offering lower latency and faster pre-loading, and supporting adaptive thermal management for an enhanced gaming experience. Gamers can also download the WD Black Dashboard with its new Game Mode 2.0 (Windows only) to further unlock performance and features.
