Stop & Shop, Food Lion Hit by Cyberattack: Supply Chain Disrupted
Ahold Delhaize, the largest grocery retailer on the East Coast of the United States, has experienced a severe cyber incident affecting its American store chains, including Stop & Shop, Food Lion, and Hannaford. Reports suggest that as a result of the attack, customers in the northeastern US are increasingly encountering empty shelves in stores.
On November 8, Ahold Delhaize USA issued a statement confirming that its internal networks had been subjected to a cyberattack and immediately alerted law enforcement authorities. To mitigate the damage, cybersecurity experts were enlisted, and some systems were temporarily taken offline. The incident has disrupted the operations of the company’s pharmacies and online platforms.
Although the retailer assured that stores continue to serve customers, social media posts paint a different picture, with users lamenting product shortages and staff confusion on-site.
According to local media reports, severe supply chain disruptions have been observed in Stop & Shop stores across Massachusetts. Store managers attribute the delays in product delivery to logistical issues stemming from the cyberattack.
The company has not disclosed whether customer or employee data has been compromised. As of now, no hacker group has claimed responsibility for the breach. Ahold Delhaize emphasized in its statement that safeguarding the data of its customers and employees remains a top priority.
Founded in 2016, the Dutch-Belgian company Ahold Delhaize oversees 16 brands across nine countries. However, this cyber incident has impacted only its American operations. The event underscores the vulnerability of modern digital systems, which are not only integral to business operations but also essential to the daily lives of millions.
