Seagate Opens eBay Store for Certified Refurbished Hard Drives
In recent years, numerous hardware manufacturers have introduced their own Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, establishing corresponding implementation timelines. In last year’s report, Seagate outlined its annual progress toward achieving company goals: 100% renewable energy usage for its global footprint by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040. Notably, by 2023, Seagate had already surpassed 50% of this target.
To reduce electronic waste and expand its sustainability efforts, Seagate announced the opening of an official store on eBay, selling certified refurbished hard drives. Through its drive recycling program, Seagate receives used drives, evaluates them for certification compliance, and ensures rigorous data sanitization to adhere to industry standards. Seagate guarantees that these refurbished drives meet “top-tier quality,” contributing to waste reduction.
Seagate reported that in fiscal year 2023 (July 2022 to June 2023), it extended the lifespan of approximately 1.19 million hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) through its refurbishment program, preventing over 553 metric tons of electronic waste from reaching landfills. By reintegrating and prolonging product lifecycles, Seagate maximized electronic waste reduction.
Among Seagate’s seven global manufacturing sites, at least four have fully transitioned to renewable energy through procurement contracts and solar system installations, accounting for more than half of the company’s total energy consumption. As a founding member of the Circular Drive Initiative (CDI), Seagate collaborates with partners in digital storage, sustainability, and blockchain to ensure the secure reuse of storage hardware, further mitigating electronic waste.
