Samsung’s M14 OLED: Coming to iPhone 16 Pro, Possibly Pixel 9
Apple and Google are expected to acquire Samsung’s new “M14” OLED panels for their high-end products set to be released this year, namely the iPhone 16 Pro series and the Pixel 9 series, ensuring that both flagship models will have synchronized display technology.
According to Wccftech, Samsung will provide OLED panels for all four iPhone 16 models this year, though the configurations will vary by model. Notably, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature higher-quality LTPO screens, with OLED panels based on M14 materials. Rumor has it that Google might opt for the “M14” OLED panels in several Pixel 9 models, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
In Samsung’s OLED screens, the letter “M” denotes a set of materials used by Samsung. The number “14” signifies the quality of these materials, with higher numbers indicating superior quality, offering enhanced brightness and longevity for the panels. The M14 utilizes phosphorescent OLED materials, replacing the previous fluorescent OLED materials. Due to different luminescence mechanisms, the former boasts higher efficiency, thus reducing the power consumption of OLED panels.
As for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Apple will reduce screen configurations by using the previous generation “M12” OLED panels to save production costs and create a distinction from the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which will use the “M14” OLED panels.
Compared to Apple, Google has another advantage as the Pixel 9 series is expected to be released before the iPhone 16 Pro series, allowing users to experience the next-generation OLED screens earlier.
