Microsoft Expands AccountGuard to Protect African Democracies from Cyberattacks
Microsoft has released a new Digital Defense Report, focusing on state-sponsored cyber threats. According to the report, some of the most vulnerable sectors to cyberattacks include IT, educational and research institutions, as well as government organizations. Notably, groups affiliated with China, Iran, and North Korea are particularly active in these areas.
The report further highlights that non-governmental organizations, such as think tanks and human rights groups, rank fourth among targeted entities, frequently facing interference attempts, especially in emerging democracies.
In response to escalating threats, Microsoft is expanding its efforts to safeguard democratic institutions across Africa. As part of the Democracy Forward initiative, the company has announced the launch of Microsoft AccountGuard in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. This program is designed to shield political, human rights, and research organizations from state-sponsored cyberattacks.
Microsoft AccountGuard offers free protection to Microsoft 365 users by adding an additional layer of security for online accounts. The service provides proactive threat notifications and incident consultations, enabling organizations to respond swiftly to threats. AccountGuard also covers personal accounts of staff members, including Hotmail, Outlook, and Skype, significantly mitigating data risks.
The company emphasizes that implementing AccountGuard is a crucial step in countering cyberattacks often aimed at political and journalistic organizations. Microsoft also intends to extend this program to other African nations, such as Ghana, providing broader access to advanced cybersecurity solutions.
In addition to cyberattack protection, the service offers educational materials and access to webinars, helping organizations to better understand and prevent threats. For enhanced security, Microsoft collaborates with companies like Yubico and Quorum Cyber to provide more robust authentication and incident response solutions.
The expansion of AccountGuard to the African market complements its presence in 36 countries worldwide and underscores Microsoft’s commitment to strengthening the defense of democratic institutions against next-generation threats.
