Meta Quest V68 Arrives: Layout Utility App Revolutionizes Mixed Reality
Meta announced on its official blog that the Quest V68 system update will begin rolling out. This update introduces a new MR application called Layout Utility.
Although the name might seem a bit obscure, its purpose is quite straightforward. The Layout Utility allows users to visualize the dimensions of real-world objects. For example, before ordering a chair, one can use this tool to measure the height of a table; or, before placing a recliner, one can estimate its placement. The application also offers a level to check if picture frames are straight or to visualize how different sizes of televisions would look in a room before purchasing.
In essence, it is akin to the iPhone’s measuring app, but within a headset, the immersive experience is significantly enhanced compared to a phone or tablet.
Additionally, the V68 system update brings a series of performance improvements, including:
- Faster Application Downloads: Developers have made some backend improvements, enabling the headset to download multiple games and applications simultaneously. Meta has also added a new “Downloads” tab in the app library, allowing users to track and manage all downloads in one place.
- Enhanced Graphics Performance: Developers have released a new frame timing algorithm for OpenXR, which will improve the overall frame rate and prediction latency of the Meta Quest, thereby reducing latency and stuttering in OpenXR applications.
As with previous Meta Quest system updates, V68 will be rolled out in phases based on server availability. If your headset has not yet received the update, please be patient.
