Leaked: NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 D to Replace RTX 4090 D in China
In December 2023, NVIDIA officially unveiled the GeForce RTX 4090 D. The “D” in the model name stands for “Dragon,” coinciding with the Year of the Dragon in the traditional Chinese zodiac for 2024. This release is NVIDIA’s compliance-oriented version for the Chinese mainland market, designed to adhere to new U.S. export controls on cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) chips, replacing the flagship GeForce RTX 4090, which is restricted.
According to VideoCardz, NVIDIA is preparing a custom version of the GeForce RTX 5090 (possibly RTX 5090 D?) for the Chinese mainland market, scheduled for release in January 2025. This new model is intended to replace the current GeForce RTX 4090 D. However, the extent of differences between the new graphics card and the GeForce RTX 5090 remains unclear. The memory configuration may be retained, featuring 28GB of GDDR7, a 448-bit memory bus, and a speed of 28 Gbps.
The previous RTX 4090 D had to comply with the total processing power (TPP) limit of 4800, while the RTX 4090 exceeded this limit by approximately 10%, with a TPP of 5286 for both FP8 and FP16. This necessitated a reduction in the RTX 4090’s specifications for the RTX 4090 D. The RTX 4090 D features the AD102-250 GPU, with the number of CUDA cores reduced from 16,384 to 14,592, Tensor cores from 512 to 456, and RT cores from 128 to 114. However, the base frequency of the RTX 4090 D is slightly higher at 2280 MHz compared to the RTX 4090’s 2235 MHz, while the boost frequency remains the same at 2520 MHz.
If a custom GeForce RTX 5090 does indeed exist, it will also need to meet the total processing power (TPP) limit of 4800.
