Google Drops Lollipop: Android 5.0 Support Ends
Google recently announced that it will officially cease providing technical support for Android 5.0 Lollipop. Devices continuing to use this operating system version will no longer receive system upgrades or security updates. In fact, Google had already set many technical support minimum version requirements to Android 6.0 Marshmallow long ago. Currently, devices using Android 5.0 to 5.1.1 account for less than 1% of the market, prompting Google to consider this operating system version as history.
Last July, Google announced the end of technical support for Android 4.4 KitKat. The entry-level Android 6.0 operating system is expected to terminate its support services in July 2025, with Android 7.0 Nougat anticipated to replace it.
Android 5.0 was first unveiled at Google’s I/O in June 2014, with the Motorola-manufactured Nexus 6 being the first device to feature this version of the operating system.
