Edge on the Rise: Microsoft’s Browser Hits Record 13.74% Market Share
In recent years, Microsoft Edge has seen a significant rise in market share. Initially, despite Microsoft’s extensive promotional efforts, the browser did not gain much traction. However, in the past two years, the rapid introduction of new features seems to have drawn more users.
According to the latest statistics from Statcounter, as of July 2024, Microsoft Edge’s market share has increased to 13.74%, up from 10.76% in July 2023, a year-on-year increase of 2.98%, and a month-on-month increase of 0.39% from June 2024.
For Microsoft, this increase is quite substantial, considering that around three years ago, the browser’s market share hovered between 7% and 8%. It has almost doubled since then. Although this growth might not seem significant in isolation, it is more apparent when compared to Mozilla Firefox, which has seen its market share decline from about 7% to 8% to the current 6.64%, while Microsoft Edge’s share is now more than twice that of Firefox.
The rapid growth of Microsoft Edge can be attributed to several factors, including its bundling with Windows 10/11, being set as the default browser, and making it more difficult to switch to other browsers.
In addition to these reasons, Microsoft Edge has maintained a brisk pace of updates, adding numerous new features and improvements. This aggressive development has even prompted Google to accelerate the update frequency for Chrome, which previously had a slower rate of feature introductions.
As for Google Chrome, it remains the market leader and is expected to retain this position for the foreseeable future. Chrome’s market share stands at 64.72%, more than 4.7 times that of Microsoft Edge.
