Cyberattack Wave Hits Cyprus: Government and Private Sector Targeted
Cyprus successfully thwarted a cyberattack on the government portal, which aimed to block access to the state’s online services. This incident was part of a series of attacks targeting both public and private entities in the country over the course of three days.
The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy of Cyprus reported that the swift and coordinated efforts of specialists helped avert the attack. The primary objective of the attackers was to disrupt access to several government websites.
As a result of the DDoS attack, access to the “gov.cy” portal was briefly interrupted, but other ministerial and departmental websites remained inaccessible to the attackers and continued to operate normally. The ministry did not disclose who was behind the attacks or what motives might have driven them.
This incident occurred against the backdrop of other attacks recorded in Cyprus earlier. At the end of last week, hackers attempted to disrupt the operations of electrical and telecommunications services, as well as the airport operator Hermes and the fuel company EKO Cyprus Ltd.
According to Cypriot authorities, all attempts were unsuccessful, no customer data was leaked, and systems continued to function without interruption.
