Cyberattack Hits IGT: US Gaming Giant Takes Systems Offline
The largest gaming company in the United States has reported a cyberattack that caused widespread disruptions to its operations, necessitating the shutdown of certain systems to safeguard its infrastructure.
The multinational corporation International Game Technology (IGT) informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it became aware of the incident on November 24, after detecting interruptions in the functionality of internal IT systems and applications.
To prevent further damage, specific systems were taken offline, and efforts are ongoing to investigate and restore normal operations. The company is actively working to mitigate the impact and resume services. While IGT has yet to determine whether the incident will affect its financial performance, temporary measures have been implemented to ensure continued customer support.
As of the time of reporting, no hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, over the past year, cybercriminals have frequently targeted casinos and lotteries using ransomware.
Notable examples include the attacks on the hospitality and entertainment giant MGM Resorts and the casino network Caesars Entertainment. Caesars reportedly paid $15 million to restore operations within days, while MGM required over a week to recover. A similar incident previously affected the Ohio State Lottery, highlighting the growing interest of cybercriminals in this sector.
