The Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust in the United Kingdom has fallen victim to a severe cyberattack, disrupting the operations of all medical facilities within the trust.
On the evening of November 25, the administration of Arrowe Park Hospital declared a state of emergency. The attack rendered all electronic systems at the medical center inaccessible, including patient databases and diagnostic results. Staff were forced to urgently revert to manual record-keeping.
By the morning of November 26, it became evident that the attack had impacted all trust facilities—Arrowe Park Hospital, Clatterbridge Hospital, and Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital. Patients arriving for scheduled appointments were turned away, while radiology departments and operating theaters ceased functioning. Sources indicated that the administration is considering redirecting patients to hospitals in Liverpool.
On the evening of November 26, the medical center issued an updated statement announcing the cancellation of all outpatient appointments for Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite the disruptions, the following services continue to operate as usual:
- Maternity wards
- Antenatal consultations
- Midwifery appointments
- Ultrasound diagnostics
- Postnatal care
- 24/7 emergency services
Specialists are working diligently to resolve the aftermath of the cyberattack. The hospital administration assured that all patients whose appointments were canceled will be informed of new dates. Emergency departments are accepting only critical cases.
