120Hz+ Gaming Monitors Dominate: 9% Growth in 2024
The market research firm Omdia has released its latest report on the monitor market, highlighting the continued growth of gaming monitors with refresh rates of 120Hz and above. The annual growth rate for 2024 is projected to reach 9%, with shipments expected to hit 24.7 million units. Simultaneously, the market for smart monitors equipped with operating systems (OS) and streaming service applications is also experiencing significant growth, with an anticipated shipment of 1.2 million units in 2024, representing an impressive annual growth rate of 63%.
Hidetoshi Himuro, Senior Principal Analyst at Omdia, remarked, “Monitors, much like televisions, are becoming increasingly intelligent. In the B2C market for gaming and smart monitors, manufacturers are focusing on maximizing content handling capabilities and enhancing the user experience.”
Since the third quarter of 2023, the desktop monitor market has been steadily growing, fully recovering from the post-pandemic impact. In the first quarter of 2024, desktop monitor shipments reached 30.7 million units, marking a 5% year-on-year increase. Notably, the markets for gaming and smart monitors are expanding rapidly, driven by their multifunctionality and high added value. Samsung and LG dominate the smart monitor market, with Acer following closely behind, and more brands are expected to join in the future. With the emergence of more non-gaming monitors featuring 120Hz refresh rates, shipments in the traditionally defined gaming monitor market are expected to continue rising.
Omdia predicts that by 2028, gaming monitor shipments will increase to 27.4 million units, while the smart monitor market will grow to 2.1 million units, including the demand for B2B applications.
